"A Markham hockey team goalie was in serious condition in Branson Hospital last night after a skate slashed his throat at Chesswood Arena.
Kim Crouch, 18, a goalie with Markham Waxers, a provincial Junior A League team, came out of his net after a loose puck during the second period of the game against the Royal York Royals.
Two other players also sped towards the puck and Crouch dove to recover about 25 feet in front of his own goal.
As he went down, witnesses said, the two other players, one a Waxer defenceman and the other a Royal player, leaped over the goalie. One of the speeding skates slashed Crouch across the right side of his throat. First reports were that his jugular vein had been severed.
"His back was to me on the bench when he went down and I knew he'd been hurt," said Waxer trainer Joe Piccininni, Jr. "But even hurt as he was he made a grab for the puck, got it and stopped the play - a real goalie," the trainer added."
Kim's love of the game forced his dad Ed Crouch, chief of the Whitby fire department, to the drawing boards with an idea for a protective neck collar for his son, Kim.
Today, that collar is used around the world, protecting goalies and players alike.
Kim Crouch's neck guard remains the only collar MADE IN CANADA
